Canon SLR zoom lens – Canon SLR
How long can Canon SLR Lens last? 15 years or 20 years?
I plan to bid on a Canon Lens manufactured in 1999. I just do not what is the life span of SLR zoom lens.
Before bidding, make sure the lens has a mount similar to your camera. Canon has modified its lens mount at least once. Lenses can last more than a lifetime as long as they are taken cared of properly by their owners.

What setting should I have My digital slr camera on ( Sony a230) ?
So on the weekend Im going to be taking some shots of my friends racing their skii boats on the esplande. Ive had my camera for a while now but just wondering what setting and ISO I should have it on. It will be about 7:30 when the race starts so early morning and sunny…. any suggestions? thanks =)
If you can track the boats well, try a slower shutter speed like 1/30, so everything but the boat you’re tracking motion-blurs.

Nikon SLR 12-megapixel – Nikon SLR
what is the difference between a digital camera and an SLR?
I’m looking into buying an expensive camera and I noticed for nikon they offer a 12-megapixel digital camera for $100 dollars less then a 10.2-megapixel SLR camera.
Since I am Pretty much a camera newbie and really only know the higher the megapixel the better the picture, so my question is what is the difference between the two that I am missing here.
Which do you believe is the better buy?
There is a massive difference in the quality of photos and video when you compare compacts with fixed lenses (regardless of price or brand) and dSLRs. The main reason is the image sensor size not the pixel count.
You can ignore pixel counts because they don’t mean better quality images. A 10 megapixel compact and a 10 megapixel dSLR are very different. The image sensor in a compact is so small, that it would take 12 or more of them to cover the image sensor in an entry level dSLR.
That larger image sensor has less noise, can take cleaner shots in low light, has better dynamic range, detail, color and contrast when compared to the tiny sensor in a compacts, or the even smaller sensors used in cell phone cams.
You can also get compact-ish cameras with large image sensors like the Sony NEX line, 4/3rds cameras from Olympus and Panasonic and the new 1 series from Nikon like the J1. So you are paying for the image sensor, that’s the big difference.
So if video and photo image quality, speed etc is your top priority go with any kind of camera with a large image sensor. If compact size and low cost are your priority, just get a cheap compact.

Recommend a good Nikon SLR film camera please?
I have some digital gear, all Nikon, and would love to round out my arsenal with a nice film camera. I know that the prices on film SLR cameras has dropped A LOT – can someone give me a nice model SLR that would be great for those days when I want to shoot some film?
I would say to go to adorama and look at the Nikon F4 or F5 they were professional level SLR in thier day but now are available at a very good price used.

What Canon SLR camera uses the Rebel Ti lenses?
I want to buy a Canon SLR body for my sister. She used to have a Rebel Ti but it stopped working. Which model, besides the Rebel Ti is compatible with the lense her came with?
Any Canon EOS camera will use the same lenses as the Rebel Ti.
Canon SLR 500 – Canon SLR
i need a used digital slr, preferably canon, under 500$. Any suggestions?
In that price range you will easily find used Canon Rebels XT or XTi. You may also find some fine Canon 20D and maybe even Canon 30D. All are good choices, with the 20D & 30D being even more desirable than the Rebels.
camera Batteries
Camera batteries..?
I’m starting to take photography as a serious hobby.
& am thinking of getting a new camera.
Would you recommend a camera with a rechargable battery or one with AA batteries?
In general, cameras designed with their own rechargeable batteries have longer working times than those using disposable batteries so you can take more pictures before you batteries run down. If you get one that comes with a rechargeable battery be sure to check the price of a replacement battery. And it’s a good idea to get a spare. That way you can have one on the charger/ready to use while you are taking pictures and when the one in the camera runs down you can switch to the spare and start charging the exhausted one.
You could also buy rechargable “AA” type batteries and a charger unit but if you do that you should make sure you get “Nickel – Metal Hydride” (Ni-MH) type batteries for cameras because they are best suited for the type of electrical load that cameras and flash units require. (They charge quickly and give a long, steady output then lose their power very quickly so the camera is either fully functional or won’t work at all).

Hi,
You do not say if you have a camera yet, or if so what type – though I might guess a Nikon DSLR?
After reading the manual a couple of times, you should know which buttons to press and which knobs to turn to alter the camera settings. The next thing is to understand is what settings are best for a given situation. There are many on-line resources for this – one example below – but the best thing is to use your camera, take pictures and criticize you own work.
The second link is to “expose to the right” all you wanted to know about histograms and were afraid to ask. Luminous Landscape has a good selection of tutorials and briefings, both for starter and more advanced users. Google the specific area you want to know about – and you will certainly find it.
If you are at all serious, I would suggest you forget the camera “auto” modes and use Tv or Av. Get to know what works for your style and what does not – this is difficult if the camera is making all the decisions for you.
Do lots of tests – set up the camera and shoot the same subject at different settings, see for yourself what makes a difference.
Join a camera club or society – people are free with advice and critique. Local colleges may also have short, or evening courses for beginners. Look at the websites for photographers you admire, Magnum for example is a concentration of the world’s best.
Both Nikon and Canon offer “experience days” just make sure it is at the right level for you.
Don’t buy a camera magazine for a year after you get your camera – it will just make you want some more kit, which is probably unnecessary!
There are many answers on YA dealing with first DSLR choice if you have not made one already.
Learning photograph is an incremental process, you move forward step-by-step, and hopefully with not to many backward steps. I have been photographing for over 40 years, and am still learning – and loving it!
Good luck
Cheers
Charles
